Gauchito Gil’s Malbec World Day tangos its way to Melbourne and Sydney in April

Melbourne’s popular Gauchito Gil’s Malbec World Day is making its way to Sydney for the first time, with the event set for Saturday, 23rd April. Named for the legendary, Robin Hood-like Argentine character, Gauchito Gil (who was also known as the Patron Saint of Thieves), the event is organised through Bottle Shop Concepts, who have also run events Game of Rhones and Pinot Palooza.

The event will take place at the National Art School (Cell Block Theatre) in Darlinghurst.  Tickets are $50 each and include a Plumm REDa wine glass (valued at $30) and all the wines on tasting.

The Malbec grape is famous in Argentina (the world’s largest Malbec producer) , so these events, first in Melbourne on the 17th April and then in Sydney the week after, make it the largest celebration of Malbec in Australia.  There will be over 80 styles of Malbec wines from both Argentina and Australia on show during Gauchito Gil’s Malbec World Day.

The events will also be a showcase of other aspects of Argentine culture.  Enjoy the music and dance and be transported to sophisticated Buenos Aires, and try your hand (or your feet) at tango dancing.  Argentine food will also be available at both events.  Sydney’s famed Barbecue restaurant Porteño will be present at the Sydney event, and guests will be able to sample their empanadas.  These treats will also be available to Melbourne guests, thanks to Piqueos, Gertrude St Enoteca, The Mill House, El Alamo, and Casa Ciucco.  Melbournites will get to see who wins the two ‘Golden Empanada’ trophies, one for People’s Choice (voted guests on the day), and the Professional Award (judged by leading food and wine judges like wine writer Mike Bennie, restaurant critic Gemima Cody and instagrammer Phil Ferguson – @chiliphilly – who will be making a custom-made crochet empanada just for Gauchito Gil).

Other beverages and cuisine include cheese from Yarra Valley Dairy and Argentine beer Quilmes.
