Bacon Festival returns for its third instalment from 14 March at Newtown’s Cuckoo Callay. Running for 12 weeks, the festival features nine bacon-focused dishes alongside the usual menu. Cuckoo Callay may be best known for their annual Bacon Festival Menu, but this chirpy Newtown café deserves a closer look at their ever-changing all day menu, which has recently been overhauled for the winter season. We’re not talking about one or two additional dishes either; the owners regularly experiment with massive, inventive combinations that refresh the offerings and keep things exciting. Australia’s iconic gelato champions Gelato Messina are finally expanding to include a store in the inner-west, and it’s going to be located right smack bang in the middle of Newtown’s King Street. Newtown institution Union Hotel is turning down the lights for a special craft beer event this month, tapping 40 dark beers over two evenings to help make the winter cold that much more bearable, as well as highlighting some of the country’s best winter brews (many of which are crowd-sourced suggestions). 20 Dark Kegs will be tapped each night, starting with the first 20 on Friday 17th June with one beer per brewery, and finishing the next night with 20 different brews on Saturday 18th June....
