Cuckoo Callay may be best known for their annual Bacon Festival Menu, but this chirpy Newtown café deserves a closer look at their ever-changing all day menu, which has recently been overhauled for the winter season. We’re not talking about one or two additional dishes either; the owners regularly experiment with massive, inventive combinations that refresh the offerings and keep things exciting. This past Saturday saw Cuckoo Callay’s inaugural Bacon Brewfest take over Central Park for a full day of over 30 food and drink stalls dishing up their best bacon-centric creations. From 12pm to 9pm, two areas throughout the unique precinct (aMBUSH Gallery on the top floor and the lawn area downstairs) were packed out with people scrambling to try all these quirky, exclusive creations which came from the likes of Black Star Pastry, Brewristas, Mr Bao, Textbook Boulangerie, Burgers by Josh, and The Stinking Bishops; all of whom gave us our fill of bacon from bacon ice creams and bacon cakes to bacon burgers, bacon shakes, smokey bacon tea, bacon baos, bacon mac’n’cheese, bacon pizzas, bacon croissants…you get the point.... Last year imaginative Newtown cafe Cuckoo Callay staged their very first bacon festival, with a temporary menu lasting several weeks offering nothing but inspired bacon-centric dishes, leading to a whopping two tonnes being sold throughout the event and an even bigger dedicated following since. At the end of this month, the Bacon Festival will return, bolstered by it’s popularity to be even bigger than last year, with a one-day launch event called Bacon Brewfest to be held at Central Park and aMBUSH Gallery on February 27th, featuring collaborations by a whole heap of Sydney’s best including Grumpy Donuts, N2 Gelato, and Black Star Pastry.
