On the Shelf: Doritos x Pizza Hut BBQ Meatlovers Corn Chips

Two years ago Doritos and Pizza Hut partnered up to offer Australians a limited edition Doritos Crunch Crust Pizza, a relatively well-received shot at collaborative junk food that was successful enough to warrant another team-up between the brands, even if it was divisive in taste – a corn and pepperoni aftertaste? no thanks. This time around, roles have been switched and Doritos have welcomed Pizza Hut to their realm with the BBQ Meatlovers Corn Chips, said to capture the flavour of the pizza hub’s popular BBQ Meatlovers pizza. For lovers of junk food, there could be nothing sweeter than the prospect of bite-sized slices of their fav pizza in crunchy form – emphasis on the word ‘sweet’.

The classic toppings of a BBQ Meatlovers pizza are streaky bacon, smoked ham, pepperoni, Italian sausage, lightly seasoned beef, mozzarella, and a fairly sweet BBQ sauce. It always goes down a treat at house parties, and hits the spot if you’re looking for a guilt-heavy dinner and don’t know how to use a stove. Capturing all these flavours in a chip is a pretty ambitious undertaking, and while not all the above ingredients come across in a handful of these chips, the minds behind this collaboration have done well to ensure this collaboration is a much, much better undertaking than the aforementioned.

Simply put, these are like nacho cheese doritos but sweeter – a lot sweeter. I got Italian sausage, mozzarella, and BBQ sauce in a handful of these, but couldn’t quite pick up on the other toppings – especially the bacon, sadly lacking that smokey punch.

I don’t doubt that Doritos lovers keep begging the brand to introduce new flavours, but if bringing something distinctive to the table was the intention here, the BBQ Meatlovers Corn Chips don’t quite cut it. However, I would gladly down a packet or two of these purely because – like pretty much everyone – I’m a sucker for nacho cheese doritos, and as mentioned above, these aren’t too dissimilar to the classic flavour, just sweeter.

You can pick up some of these in 80g and 150g pack sizes now. The 150g pack will be initially made available in Woolies and Pizza Hut outlets, but distribution is expected to expand later this year. 80g will start off exclusive to Woolies Petrol outlets before being rolled out nationally. You can also grab them online HERE.
