Located on Toorak Road, Yagiz is a new modern Turkish restaurant from talented chef Murat Ovaz, who has moved on from Balaclava’s popular Tulum to head up his own venture. The restaurant, which features a stunning 22-seat brass communal table and is separated into both a casual walk-in bar and an expansive 60-seat dining space, has designs on becoming South Yarra’s new go-to with an assortment of Turkish and Middle Eastern influenced dishes including a whole roast of Bultarra saltbush lamb for ten people.
“Much like classic Turkish food, Yagiz brings people together”, explained Ovaz. “I wanted to create an unpretentious atmosphere, where refined dining could be enjoyed in a warm and vibrant atmosphere with no fuss. Expect to experience all the flavours of Turkey with a modern, unique twist”.
Signature dishes on the current menu including Marine Levrek with pickled sea bream, pear and sea grape; Kuzu Tartar made from lamb loin with couscous and young cos; Kalamar Dolmasi, which is calamari with ezine cheese and ink; and a dessert of semolina pudding with blood orange sorbet and pistachio.
A very open-minded wine list is available to pair up with all that Turkish fare, forming a unique list that was developed by awarded Consultant Sommelier Christian Maier with some indigenous varietals from Turkey as well as some personal favourites sourced from around the world.
