Opening up earlier this year, Wine 1160 is a big refresh to the local dining and drinking scene of Armadale. The small neighbourhood bar – pronounced eleven-sixty – boasts a 160-deep wine list, to which it is entirely dedicated, with the kitchen pumping out food that has been curated to complement the many drops on offer.
Independent artisanal producers is the focus for this wine bar, anchoring firmly in Australia’s rich and evolving scene with wine choices made on the values and practices of the makers themselves, tailored entirely to an understanding of the preferences of the locals.
“I am bringing my learning from little villages and roadside stalls, embodying their same spirit of generosity to the local community in Stonnington”, Prabir Majumbar, who has made the curious leap from political advisor to being the owner and founder of Wine 1160.
The most exciting feature of this new addition to the Melbourne scene is that benchmark wines usually only sold by the bottle are being made available by the glass, making superb quality wine more accessible to a wider audience in a harmonious space that is both open, inclusive, and expressive given the design champions the use of charming Victorian furnishings
Wine 1160’s food menu, put together by chefs Sarah Porz and Michele Curtis, offers up a range of small tastes, including wine-pairing staples such as cheese, olivers and charcuterie. Snacks include popcorn with gruyere salt, spiced chickpeas, spiced eggplant (best had with a sangiovese rosé), and meatballs with cardamom and turmeric.
