Top Melbourne bars are forming an Old Fashioned cocktail trail this week

Some of Melbourne’s top bars are forming an Old Fashioned trail for the next eight days (2nd to 10th September) to celebrate Maker’s Mark Old Fashioned Week, looking to follow Melbourne Spring Fashion Week with a different kind of style. After success earlier this year in Sydney, the classic Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky will spread a bit of their magic through the streets and laneways of the world’s most liveable city by issuing a challenge to the likes of Ms Collins and Madame Brussels, tasking all participating bars to create an exclusive Old Fashioned, where no two recipes can be the same.

The classic cocktail has traditionally been cited as the whisky-based cocktail, featuring a simple, easy-to-follow recipe that has left much room for experimentation. No doubt bars across the world have toyed with Old Fashioned cocktails since the concoction first original in Louisville, Kentucky 1880, but this week has the specific distinction of pushing that knack for experimentation a bit further, curating a trail of these classic drinks and offering each bar special Marker’s Mark glasses specifically designed to enhance the cocktail, just to help each bar team along.

“The great thing about an Old Fashioned is it makes whisky more approachable”, said Premium Spirits Ambassador for The Blend, Matt Barnett. “Maker’s Mark is perfect for the job. Switching rye out for wheat in their mash makes for a sweeter, softer spirit and in turn, a gentle sipping Old Fashioned with a long, warm finish”.

We all know bar crawls are hard to organise, so take note of these hotspots – which are all nice and close to each other – and head out on the Old Fashioned trail to see what these bartenders have been up to, and maybe learn a bit more about whisky (and why the glass used actually matters) in the process.
