There’s now no shortage of celebration for Australia’s epic BBQ scene year-round, and the first event of that kind in 2018 will be The Yak Ales Barbecue Festival. For its fourth year running, the enormous program will be heading through Melbourne with some of the best barbecue in the country. Not only that, but 2018 will also mark the festival’s debut on the NSW Central Coast, where it’ll take place in Gosford.
Four-time world barbecue champion and New York Times bestselling author Myron Mixon will be coming down to headline the whole thing, hosting four-hour classes where students will have the chance to learn superior barbecue skills as well as the recipes for Myron’s signature chicken and pork ribs. Mixon’s class will set you back $345pp, and it will be held at Flemington Racecourse on Friday 2nd February for Melbourne, and Central Coast Stadium on Friday 9th February for Gosford.
In addition to the already stacked program, there will be a KCBS certified barbecue-judging class which will allow students to become an accredited KCBS certified barbecue judge, which basically means that all successful graduates will thereby to eligible to judge any international BBQ competition certified by the authoritative KCBS. The four-hour tasting and theoretical class will see students learn the finer points of what to look for in award-winning competition-style barbecue. This special judging class will be held at Melbourne’s Que Club on Friday 2nd February, and Gosford’s Central Coast Leagues Club on Thursday 8th February. Both classes are $145pp.
The Festivals’ welcome dinners, held at Bluebonnet Barbecue in Melbourne on Thursday 1st February and Central Coast Leagues Club in Gosford on Thursday 8th February, will see an international star-studded line up join guests to kick-off two days of barbecue. Mixon will be joined by three-time world barbecue champion John David Wheeler of Memphis Barbecue Company, as well as Mike Johnson and Christina Fitzgerald of Sugarfire Smoke House, St Louis. The dinners at either venue are going for $95pp.
