That all-you-can-eat cereal cartoon party you always dreamed of is coming to Sydney

Those mornings spent waking up early to watch Ryan and Jade of Cheez TV introduce some of the best damn television ever made need not be a distant memory with an event like this. Just over a week away, the annual Sydney Underground Film Festival will make it’s triumphant return to celebrate 10 years of bringing a program of weird, wonderful, odd, challenging, and down-right disturbing films to cinephiles across the city – a program that has often included or payed homage to animated greats. That will be taken a step further when writer/film programmer Kier-La Janisse curates an early-morning cartoon love-in at the Factory Theatre, featuring all-you-can-eat-cereal and likely an array of pyjama fashion.

The all-ages event is set for Saturday 17th September and will kick off at 9am, rolling along with two hours of non-stop retro toons while kids – both big and small – try fit in as much cereal as they can. The organisers are keeping the exact content a mystery, but we’re betting there will be heaps of monsters, sci-fi, superheroes, and obsure favourites from the 1940s to the 1980s. Outrageous vintage commercial and PSAs will break up all those animated antics.

“We wanted to do fun things like that”, says Festival Director Stefan Popescu. “My childhood was made of things like that, you’d wake up on Saturday morning to just watch like two hours of cartoons and eat fruit loops or something…it’s just a bit of a retro homage to our childhood”.

The 10th annual Sydney Underground Film Festival runs from 16th to 19th September and features more than 100 selections of short films, features, documentaries, and more. The Opening Night (September 15th) film is Weiner Dog starring Danny DeVito and Tracy Letts, while the Closing Night (September 18th) film will be the controversial Multiple Maniacs. Masterclasses also feature, including one on screenwriting hosted by Gordy Hoffman (brother of the late great Phillip Seymour-Hoffman) and one on drone cinematography.
