Award-winning hidden gem Archie Rose Distilling Co., Sydney’s first commercial distillery in 160 years, have just announced the next stage in their constant evolution, adding to the whole experience of the bar-slash-distillery by offering you the chance to design your very own Vodka, Gin, or Whisky.
By simply logging on to Archie Rose’s website (link below) you can use a custom application to start the process of creating your very own bottle of either Vodka, Gin, of Whisky, designing everything right down to the label.
“This is something we’ve been working on for some time,” says founder and owner, Will Edwards. “Every day we are lucky enough to be able to play with pure botanical distillates, unique malts and rare casks to create our spirits’ flavour profiles, and thought why should we be the ones having all the fun designing spirits? It was a natural progression to go down this route and give people the opportunity to get really involved in the distilling process, which we are so passionate about.”
For those wanting to make their Vodka or Gin, the app first gives you the option to select up to five of the distillery’s unique botanical distillates to add to a bottle of Original Vodka or Signature Dry Gin, following by how intense you want those botanicals to be. The final step in the process will be personalising your bottle with a custom-made label to mark your very own Tailored Spirit, which is then delivered to your door (or any nominated address).
Those wanting to create their own Whisky have even more options, including Single Malt VS Rye Whisky, wood type (including New American Oak, French Oak, Ex-Bourbon, Ex-Port, or Ex-Sherry casks), level of smokiness, and desired ABV; there’s even one for you and up to four friends to assist in the actual creation process on-site at Archie Rose in Rosebery.
Of course, you should keep in mind that the Whisky takes a bit longer to arrive because of the maturation process. Archie Rose will stencil your name onto the cask and then store and display it on the bar rack while Archie Rose’s Production Manager and Head Distiller oversee the aging. You will receive a 200ml sample each year so you can keep track of the Whisky’s development, in addition to having the option of sampling the cask at any time by appointment.
A total of six bottles of your Tailored Whisky will be released when the final product is ready, presented to you in a handmade wooden Archie Rose crate with full brewing and distillation notes, along with one bottle of filtered water used in the production of the Whisky and two Glencairn glasses. The remaining bottles will be packed in Archie Rose cases with an option to keep your empty cask.
Tailored Vodka is priced at $84, while Tailored Gin is $89. The Tailored Whisky is, of course, a lot more expensive given the process and the final product, so the price is a cool $4000 (for a 20L cask; more if selecting a larger volume).
