Super Combo, a Street Fighter themed burger bar, opens in Bowen Hills (Brisbane)

Under The Green apartments at the Brisbane Showgrounds in Bowen Hills is where you’ll find the recently opened Super Combo, a burger bar that looks to Arcade classic Street Fighter for inspiration. Co-owned by Hao Vu and Michael Nham (of Melbourne’s NSHRY), who both grew up mashing buttons on Street Fighter II at their local takeaway, the colourful burger joint packs quite a punch with a menu named after various touchstones of the iconic fighter series.

The opening comes years after Vu and Nham introduced an umami-heavy burger at NSHRY which quickly went on to become a local favourite. Now there’s six different burgers to handle at Super Combo, in a space that will also host the team’s third Banoi venue (the first two of which are in Melbourne). The beef options make use of Angus brisket and Wagyu fat, seasoned on the grill and served up in custom-made brioche buns, while there are also other options including one chicken and one vegetarian burger.

The signature remains the Hadoken Burger, which is a version of the award-winner Vu and Nham serve up at NSHRY, made up from a beef patty, smokey mushroom sauce, American cheese, caramelised onion, roasted tomato and a parmesan crisp. Though everything else sounds just as tempting, from the standard Round 1, coming in at just under $10 with a beef patty, onion, pickle, American cheese, ketchup and American mustard, to the Yoga Flame, that aforementioned vegetarian option that smartly switches out the expected portobello mushroom and instead works in a spiced corn hash patty with capsicum relish, caramelised onion, roasted green pepper chimichurri, baby cos lettuce and mint yoghurt.

The interior is as you’d expect from a Street Fighter themed venue, mirroring the classic video game’s bright aesthetic with 3D-printed figurines looking down from the ceiling and a Super Nintendo set up so customers can play endless rounds of Street Fighter II while downing a shake with the likes of a Sonic Boom burger, the obligatory chicken sandwich that’s given it’s point of different with maple bacon, cheddar, pineapple chutney and cheese sauce.
