South-African burger bar RocoMamas makes Australian debut in Melbourne

The internationally recognised burger brand, RocoMamas has recently chosen Melbourne’s endless dining precinct, Chapel Street, to open its first flagship Australian joint. If you’re planning a visit, expect to get your hands, mouth and face dirty, as the idea behind this menu is to put down the knives and forks and attack their iconic ‘smashed burgers’ with your hands.

RocoMama’s are one of the first outside of America to adopt the smashed burger method. Their patties are rolled into a ball and pushed flat onto the grill to maximise flavour and seal in the juices – making menu items like the triple stacked ‘Slacker Burger’ incredibly tender and an experience in itself.

Their other Smash Burgers include options like the ‘Black Star’ – Southern fried chicken, slaw, tomato and sweet chilli mayo in a black bun; ‘Rockstar’ – Smash patty, bacon, Wisconsin cheddar, sweet pickles, tomato and the special RocoMayo. If you’re looking for something packing a little more heat, then the ‘Chilli Cheese Bomb’ is the way to go, with Smash patty, bacon, cheese bomb and fresh chilli with MOFO Mayo.

If burgers aren’t what you’re after, you also have the option to order the half or full rib racks, which you can get in beef, pork or lamb.

The menu also features your usual suspects: loaded fries, mac n’ cheese pucks, wings and battered onion rings. Their physical menus are a tick-box system, with an option to easily customise and build your own Smash burger by selecting any and all of your desired ingredients.

Putting a spin on the classic burger and milkshake combo, RocoMama’s have crafted a menu of Custard Shakes as a sugary dessert to pair with your burger. They have an array of rich flavours like White Choc Oreo, Nutella, Coconut Cream, and Peanut Butter. For something a little boozier, RocoMamas also have a small selection of wine and craft beer.

True to their brand of being ‘alternative, edgy and a little bit “Not Normal”‘, this burger bar has been expertly designed by BlackMilk Architects (Ripponlea Food & Wine, Ms Collins and Sash Japanese) to reflect just that. Think funky orange neon rock n’ roll burger bar, with an open kitchen to watch (and smell) your order as it’s being made.

The RocoMama’s brand started up back in South Africa in late 2013, but since then has expanded to more than 60 restaurants across the globe, making this first opening in Australia a long-awaited one.
