SKYY Vodka are fitting engagement rings to their cans to celebrate same sex marriage

Just about every step forward in society is accompanied by about a few hundred brands trying to show that they are down with the current topics of discussion. Most of the time it’s cringeworthy and ends up on certain yellow-journalism blogs as advertorial, or even TV spots starring any one of the however many Kardashians there are. But sometimes – just sometimes – they can be quite interesting and thoughtful, which are two labels we’re slapping right on the latest initiative from SKYY Vodka (and no, this isn’t a sponsored post).

To celebrate the forthcoming 40th anniversary of Sydney Mardi Gras, and highlight the fact that same sex marriage is finally legal in Australia, the popular Vodka has released a limited edition can of their premix drink with a pretty clever twist. Each of these cans will be fitted with an ‘engagement ring’ finished with a sparkly (probably fake) cubic zirconia, so couples can open their cans and then propose straight away, and there’s not a damn thing Tony Abbott can do about it.

“At SKYY we believe diversity should be celebrated”, said SKYY Vodka’s marketing director Nicole Stanners. “Since we launched the #CheerstoEquality campaign with just.equal in February last year, we’ve rallied to make equality a reality, and are excited to be part of this proud moment in Australia’s history, especially as we’re helping LGBTI Aussies get hitched with the launch of these new SKYY Vodka YYES cans”.

These cans won’t be too hard to find. Sydneysiders can get their hands on some at Gazebo Wine Bar & Dining in Elizabeth Bay, the Liquor on Oxford bottle shop in Darlinghurst, or Big Poppa’s on Oxford Street, while stocks last. $1 from every YYES product sold will be donated to the just.equal organisation to support their ongoing work in addressing the needs of LGBTI Australians.
