Review: McDonalds’ 100 per cent Australian Wagyu beef burger isn’t all that special

McDonald’s have moved on up from Angus to something a bit more expensive, introducing a burger that they say is made with 100% Australian-bred Wagyu, upping their already stacked “Gourmet Creations” range with the Wagyu Beef Burger. Though it sits at almost double the price of a Big Mac, offered from the menu for a limited time with a tag of AUD $10.75, and that price hasn’t been going down too well with fast food lovers across the country.

The burger comes between a gourmet bun made to a new recipe, complementing the wagyu patty with crispy bacon, caramelised onion, tomato, lettuce and a slice of Coon cheese. The deal-breaker here is the special sauce, which has a tangy BBQ flavour to it and saves the burger from being a bit too dry.

Although the burger is a step forward for a fast food giant constantly switching their menu up – particularly using Australia as a kind of testing-ground for new products – the Wagyu Burger isn’t receiving too much positive press. Some reviews have noted how dry the burger is, while others take issue with both the price and lack of flavour.

It is quite expensive for what you get. The Wagyu really doesn’t add as much flavour as expected, skipping over the rich, fatty and lingering taste often credited to Australian wagyu and relying mostly on the special sauce, which granted is quite tasty despite only a light drizzle.

There’s little doubt that Maccas have more new products cooking up for their Australian fans, so hopefully the next one brings something a little bit more substantial to the menu.
