The 37th Sydney International Wine Competition (SIWC) will feature two public tastings on Saturday 11 February at the Novotel Sydney Central, and will feature over 280 wines awarded TOP 1OO, Blue Gold, and Gold medals, including trophy winners. Included in this group are two ‘surprise’ medal winners – the debut Shiraz and Rosé wines blended by TV talk-show celebrity Graham Norton in association with New Zealand’s Invivo Wines.
European wineries from France, Italy and Spain feature strongly amongst the medal winners, but Australian and New Zealand wines did especially well in the competition.
Chairman of Judges Kym Milne MW recognised that the “Lighter Bodied Whites” class was one of the more intriguing of all the categories, in terms of results. “The Top 100 & Blue Gold categories feature wines made from Pinot Gris, Viognier from New Zealand, as well as Semillon, Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blends, Vermentino, Gruner Veltliner, Chardonnay and a very good Italian white blend all from a wide variety of Australian regions and climates. Add to this list an Albarino from the Rias Baixas region of Spain, and there is a lot of fascinating quality wines available to the consumer to choose from”, he said.
Milne is joined by an international panel of 14 judges, all of whom initially blind-tasted all the entrants, and then tasted the 400 top wines with appropriately matched food to decide the award winners.
“This wine competition is all about providing the consumer with a range of wine options for a range of different dining situations, and I believe the competition has once again achieved this”.
The public exhibitions of the 2017 Sydney International Wine Competition winners will be held over 2 sessions on Saturday, 11 February 2017, one from 10am to 12.30pm and the other from 2pm to 4:30pm, at The Novotel Sydney Central (169-179 Thomas St, Sydney). Tickets start from $44.
