Pizza World Champion Johnny Di Francesco opens gelateria in East Brunswick (Melbourne)

2014 Pizza World Champion Johnny Di Francesco, one of the best known names in Australia’s Italian dining scene, has recently expanded to a bit further than his two renowned pizza-focused restaurants 400 Gradi and Gradi at Crown, leaning towards the sweet tooths with his very first stand alone gelateria, Zero Gradi. Opened in East Brunswick, just a few doors down from 400 Gradi on Lygon Street, it’s been busily pumping out high quality, authentic Italian gelato, inspired by Francesco’s yearning for the traditional Neapolitan gelato of his homeland.

“Great gelato should be an everyday enjoyment, and when I am in Naples I eat gelato every day”, explained Francesco. “The gelato there is unlike any other I have found, anywhere in the world, and similarly to how and why 400 Gradi was originally created, I wanted to bring that to the people of Melbourne”.

Flavour combinations offered by Zero Gradi have been inspired by both traditional Italian and Australian combinations, even nodding to the basis for Johnny’s reputation with a unique Margherita Gelato flavour, created to celebrate the chef’s World’s Best Pizza award. The distinctive gelato is made with red sponge soaked Italian herbal liqueur (Strega), zeabaglione gelato, and a neutral flavoured gelato that has been coloured with green chlorophyll extract. Other flavours on the menu include salted caramel and pistachio.

In a nod to the traditional way Gelato is served in Italy, Zero Gradi also offers ‘panna’ (whipped cream) as an option add-on to each gelato. Cakes and shakes also feature on the menu.
