After undergoing a massive renovation, Piccolino, one of Mount Waverley’s favourite classic Italian restaurants, have once again opened their doors to the public, just in time to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
First opened in the early 90s by John Dib, Piccolino started off as a humble take-away store on Mount Waverley’s Blackburn road, serving up a wide range of authentic Italian pizza and pasta. Since its opening, with each passing year, the little family owned Italian eatery has grown in popularity amongst the locals, allowing it to reach the ripe old age of 25. However, a new visitor would hardly even guess that the venue is over two decades old, thanks to the recent renovations.
Designed by the award-winning Hachem Architects, whose previous projects include the Adelphi Hotel and Mon Bijou, Piccolino’s renovation process took over four whole years to complete. With a total capacity to seat around 100 guests, Piccolino’s brand new two-storey interior space features an admirably tall black pizza oven reaching up all the way to the soaring ceilings, providing a stark contrast against the surrounding light wooden furnishings. The restaurant’s warm and family friendly atmosphere is further enhanced by a vertical garden located near the first-floor dining area.
When it comes to food, Piccolino is sticking to its roots, with a menu full of classic Italian dishes designed to be shared amongst family and friends. Highlights of the menu include dishes such as the Linguini Marinara with scallops, king prawns, calamari and mussels tossed in either olive oil or Napoli sauce. And of course, one cannot have a proper Italian meal without enjoying some delicious wine. At Piccolino, John Dibs and his family source their wine from Giammarino Wines, owned by long-time family friend Dino Gimmarino, who hails from a large family of winemakers originating from Abruzzo, Italy.
