Pardon My French relocates to permanent shop in Prahran (Melbourne)

Originally a crêpe stall in South Melbourne Market, Pardon My French has now opened a permanent shop at 396 Chapel Street, Prahran. The famed crêperie is the brainchild of head crêpe-maker John Milic and his partner Pauline Henley- Smith, and the move is a welcome one for their loyal customers, who wait patiently in line for a crêpe at their former location.

“We had customers happily waiting up to 40 minutes for a crêpe at the South Melbourne Market, so after being there for a year we decided to give in to our customer requests and open a permanent shop. When the space on Chapel Street became available I thought, right let’s do it.” says Milic.

Crêpes are made using 40cm non-stick cast iron grills made in France, with no added oil in the cooking process. “We wanted to create a crêpe that tasted great on its own, wasn’t too heavy or oily and could be used for sweet and savoury combinations”, says Milic.

Milic has created a range of combinations and flavours, including the ‘Lamington’ with chocolate fudge, strawberry jam and desiccated coconut, and the ‘Chicken Special’ with chicken, spinach, passata, basil pesto and tasty cheese. “If you want something that isn’t on the menu just ask and we can make up a special order,” he says.  A gluten-free batter recipe is also available. “Customers can’t believe there’s no gluten; it tastes that good”.

A former bakery owner, Milic has been an ardent crêpe lover since he was a child, making crêpes using his mother’s recipe.  Witnessing a crêpe-maker at work during a weekend trip to Lorne was enough to reignite his childhood passion for the food and open a crêpe stall.

Henley-Smith also shares Milic’s passion for crepes, hard not to do since he surprised her with homemade crepes for breakfast on her birthday one year!  She supports Pardon My French whilst also juggling full-time accounting work.
