Newtown’s iconic Zanzibar has completely transformed; is now known as Websters Bar (Sydney)

Long-standing Newtown institution Zanzibar is effectively gone, transforming into what is now to be known as Websters Bar with new concepts to shape the iconic venue’s three levels, including it’s coveted rooftop. What one will now find at Websters Bar now is a sophisticated ode to vintage Whisky bars, both paying homage to the unique history of the location and drawing inspiration from the prohibition era.

Opened at the end of last month, the historic redevelopment has designed the first floor with an industrial steampunk vibe, marking the beginning of a vertical timeline which has been used as the backbone of the entire venue’s design. The second floor covers up the spaces college party history with a sophisticated 1920’s prohibition style Whisky bar. The third floor, said incredible rooftop, brings the venue all the way to the 1950s with an Australiana inspired backyard rooftop bar, brightened by astroturf and plastic flamingos.

Food will be kept consistent across the three floors, with a kitchen led by Exec. Chef Mark Cukeric dedicated to highlighting local Australian produce, presenting a range of premium beef from South East Queensland, each listed with weight, cut, and origin. Specialty dishes coming from the grill include BBQ Glazed Pork Ribs, huge BBQ Platters with ribs, scotch fillets, flame grilled cevapcici, Mooloolaba split king prawns, and sides. The more up-scale meat dishes is balanced with pub classic like gourmet pizzas, burgers, and share plates.

Signature cocktails like the Jam & Smoke (Laphroaig Select Cask, Grand Marnier, lemon juice, marmalade jam) and Jammin’ with Whisky will add a bit of the venue’s own flavour to the drinks list, which also includes world class Whiskys, local craft brews, imported Belgian beers, and award-winning Hunter Valley wines.

Keen to re-establish with the locals under a new look and name, Websters Bar have a few events planned for the coming months, highlighting their extensive Whisky range among other things. One such event is an American Whisky Masterclass to be held on Wednesday 8th June, featuring a tasting of six distinct styles of American Whisky with share platters for $30pp. For a full schedule of their events head to the website listed below.
