Museum of Contemporary Art celebrates Tatsuo Myajima with pop up Cherry Blossom Bar (Sydney)

To celebrate the new and exclusive Tatsuo Miyajima exhibition at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art, the institution has transformed their harbour-side space into a popup Cherry Blossom Bar full of Japanese saké, whisky and beers. The summery outdoor bar popped up this weekend and will remain in place throughout the exhibition, right up until 5th March next year.

In previous years, MCA have hosted pop up bars connected with past exhibitions like the gin garden which was constructed to complement Grayson Perry’s fabulous residency last year, furthering engagement with the various collections regularly hosted at MCA. This new Cherry Blossom bar will build upon that philosophy, marrying good food and drink with even better art so that guests heading along to see the dramatic tech-driven exhibition of sculptures and installations can pop by before or after.

The bar, which is also being offered for private functions, will be completely open to the public throughout its duration, presenting a number of neat collaborations including one with Archie Rose Distillery which has resulted in a tailored gin designed to blend with saké for various cocktails. QT Sydney mixologist Jared Thibault has also come on board to introduce a signature cocktail to the bar each month, starting with the current Nashi Kabukin Highball which is made with Kakubin whisky, nashi pear, citrus, ginger and lemongrass.

MCA’s catering partner Culinary Edge has taken care of the menu, designed towards Izakaya inspired share plates, bringing in options like edamame, karaage, gyoza, chargrilled yakitori and specially made bento boxes.

Tatsuo Myajima: Connect with Everything will be running at the MCA from Thursday 3rd November as part of the 2016-17 Sydney International Art Series. It is the renowned artist’s first solo exhibition in Australia and his first major survey exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere, encompassing key works from the beginnings of his career to the present.
