Melbourne’s three-day Chinese lantern festival returns this weekend

Melbourne’s annual Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival by Crown Melbourne is set to return this weekend, stretching over three days for its fifth year in bringing tens of thousands of locals and visitors together for food, family and entertainment along the Crown Riverwalk. With various Asian eats offered from stalls which line the walk, as well as a traditional Lion dance, Chinese opera and eating competitions for both Mooncakes and Mochi, it’s once again being pushed as one of the city’s largest celebrations with an expected crowd of over 80,000.

Saturday and Sunday evening of the festival will also see a giant multi-coloured glowing bear and Chinese themed stilt walkers take to the row of stalls, getting amongst the crowds at the forefront of parade participants, tracing the long stretch that is the Riverwalk. Kids and families are encouraged to take part in the parade and will receive a beautifully lit lantern each in return for a gold coin donation, with proceeds going straight to the Kids with Cancer Foundation.
