MediTrainean is the Lower North Shore’s new mezze train (Sydney)

The lower north shore has welcomed in a new concept restaurant, MediTrainean, and it’s a combination of the flavours and fun of tapas dishes, the heartiness of a made-to-order grill menu and the stylish service delivery of a moving train, not dissimilar to that of a classic Sushi Train.

Suited for relaxed dining experiences, MediTrainean’s movable feast of Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and house-made specialities is located in the buzzing Crows Nest neighbourhood, presenting the leafy area with wine and beer lists, champagnes and non-alcoholic drinks to wash down mezze-style dishes.

The decor reflects the wildly colourful food constantly rotating the space – light-filled interiors and a cool colour scheme of azure blue, white, and soft sea green transports diners to an exotic Mediterranean destination with ease. Diners are seated at the bar or on tables that sit alongside the moving line of dishes.

According to co-owner Ashley Rofe, the inspiration for MediTrainean came to him whilst dining with friends over tapas. Rofe owns the restaurant with family members, and all dishes – like the mezze dips or the Casarecce (crispy prosciutto, sweet pea, cherry tomatoes, basil, olives and shaved grana padano) salad – are made daily on site.

“It occurred to me that serving this kind of food on a moving train would be a lot of fun and people would truly enjoy eating this way,” Ashley says. “We see ourselves as the ultimate in the quick service restaurant space as our food is such high quality and so flavoursome. It’s food that everybody loves and served in every way to make eating convenient no matter what you need or want – to dine in, have a quick meal or simply pick-up and run. This makes MediTrainean perfect for commuters, couples, singles, groups, families – basically everyone.”

Entrees include Mussels spiced with caramelized onion, rice and lemon, the Stuffed Zucchini with lamb and fresh herbs or the Fish Cakes made with fresh Atlantic salmon.

Whilst some may enjoy the smaller dishes, it’s also worth noting the flame-grilled kitchen specials like the fresh Tiger Prawns in garlic, olive oil and herbs, the Lamb Skewer finely minced with lemon, garlic and olive oil and Arancini made with the finest porcini mushrooms herbs and provolone.

Desserts also feature on MediTrainean’s menu. Dishes to try include the Roast Quince with crème fraiche and halva, the Chocolate Pudding with seasonal berries or the traditional Baklava dripping in honey and filled with crunchy cashews.
