As more and more attention is being brought to the cultural scenes outside of Sydney CBD and the inner-west it seems that Liverpool will be the next suburb to receive a lush new modern cultural and community hub, reshaping the area’s industrial past to bring new life to The Paper Mill. Previous restorations of historical spaces like Annadale’s Tramsheds have proven to be a great success, so turning this heritage-listed site into a space for new dining and retail options seems like a logical step forward.
Coronation Property will be overseeing this restoration, which is positioned alongside the Georges River on the southern edge of Liverpool CBD. The site was once home to the Collingwood Paper Mill, which was the country’s first paper-manufacturing business when it opened back in 1868, said to have produced a whopping 20 tonnes of paper per week. Now, the surviving early 20th century industrial building will become an open-plan dining venue, drawing inspiration from some of the city’s best food hubs like Newtown and Surry Hills.
This refurbishment will include substantial focus on the building’s sightly sawtooth roof, hovering over what will be a multitude of dining experiences offered from traditional stalls, including an artisanal bakery and cafe, a rotisserie, woodfired pizza kitchen, dessert carts, and an in-house brewery, in addition to some private dining experiences.
As far as retail goes, approximately 1,400 square meters will be dedicated to bringing in businesses, laid out in a contemporary open-plan setting with exposed ceilings and concrete flooring.
“The retail precinct will become a place where people can meet up with friends and family for a meal, or alternatively just grab a coffee and a snack”, offered Managing Director of Coronation Property Joe Nahas. “Ultimately we’d like to emulate the buzzing retail and food culture that areas such as Balmain, Newtown or Surry Hills provide”.
The new precinct, the opening date of which is yet to be announced, will form part of a wider redevelopment of the area by Coronation Property, which includes the construction of 882 on-site apartments across four contemporary buildings: The Paper Mill, The Bindery, The Gild and The Foundry.
