La Poutine Week has come to Australia!

Don’t know what Poutine is? Why it’s only the greatest food creation to come out of Canada in forever (yes, even greater than maple syrup). The country’s national dish, French fries topped with cheese curds and gravy (in it’s most basic form), is not a common sight in Australia, mainly because you can’t find the necessary cheese curds here, but that’s not stopping this country from finally getting involved in the famous La Poutine Week, which lasts from now until Sunday Feb 7th.

La Poutine Week, co-founded by Thierry Rassam, is mostly a Canadian thing (of course), but this year it’s being celebrated in more countries than ever before, with restaurants, fast-food joints, and diners around Australia getting involved with their best take on the classic poutine.

If you’re in Sydney you can head along to Bondi’s excellent Stuffed Beaver for your poutine fix. They have seven takes on the classic available, as well as a special for this week that is Mexican style poutine finished with jalapenos, chipotle-marinated chicken, roasted bell peppers, and sauteed onions. Alternatively, if you’re really in a rush you can check out Lord of the Fries in the CBD.

Melbournians can also get their fix from Lord of the Fries, or they can check out Big Huey’s Diner in South Melbourne for an Aussie Poutine with beer battered fries, melting cheese, and Dijon mustard gravy; Belleville for their Peking Poutine, with shredded duck gravy, beer-battered chips, and hoisin aioli (headline image); or The Spotted Mallard in Brunswick, where you’ll find a special poutine of duck, pulled pork and black bean.

Wollongong poutine fans can get their fix from Le Montreal Shack who have a Roasted Aussie Lamb Shank Poutine with authentic cheese curd from Montreal.
