KFC have introduced a black zinger burger to their menu for the next few weeks in Australia

In a surprising twist on a menu classic, QSR KFC have introduced what they are calling the Zinger Black Burger, jumping onto the trend of black burgers in a big way, but completely overhauling the classic zinger with a dark black bun topped with chilli flakes and nigella seeds, holding in some creamy mustard maple sauce which is spread onto the bun both above and below the crispy Zinger fillet. The burger is finished off with cheese, crispy bacon, crunchy lettuce, and juicy tomatoes. It’s one of the most distinctive limited edition menu items KFC have ever introduced and it’s available from today 22nd March.

“A black burger bun is a bold move.” said KFC Chief Food Innovation Officer Fritz Meyer. “We are passionate about our burger range and know that our customers love our current core menu. We are always looking for new ways to excite our customers and this addition to our menu is designed to surprise and provide a new taste experience.”

We previewed the burger ahead of the launch last week, giving it a little taste taste before it was released to the public. It’s sweet, to say the least, and that sweetness comes from the rich nigella seeds and the maple sauce, which tastes much like honey mustard coating the zinger generously. There’s a little smack of smokiness in the back palate, but mainly it wins because of the crunchy zinger fillet, which remains one of the best fast food creations in fast food history. If you don’t like your burgers sweet the we suggest asking for less of the maple sauce.

You’ll get 1973kJ from one of these, with 35.9 protein, 19.2g of fat, 45.7g carbs, 1566mg sodium, and 11.9g of sugars. These are all a bit higher than your regular Zinger burger so we wouldn’t suggest making this black burger a daily habit but as it stands, this is one of our favourite KFC one-offs that will hopefully meet enough demand to make it a bit more permanent.

The Zinger® Black Burger is $7.45 individually and will be available from 22nd March to 18th April at KFC stores across Australia (with the exception of Tasmania).
