Here’s something to raise your glass to: Bars March, a month-long event that will make any bar aficionado happy, is back in 2016, and it’s all for raising money for animal charities.
More than just a celebration of bar culture, Bars March brings together over 50 venues across the city, helping to raise money for the Animal Welfare League NSW, who have received $80,000 so far from participating Bars March bars.
Once known as Good Times for a Good Cause, Bars March was created in 2010 by Amy Cooper and is now in its 7th year. An alternative to “dry” campaigns like FebFast and Ocsober, the initiative supports Sydney’s world-class bars, whilst also assisting the work of animal welfare organisations like the Animal Welfare League NSW. In turn, the Animal Welfare League NSW (AWL) works to improve the lives of surrendered, neglected or abandoned pets, through regulatory work with various Government bodies and via customised foster care and shelters.
You can support the Bars March initiative by visiting the venues involved, buying a charity cocktail, attending fundraising events or entering the event’s social media competitions.
Participating venues range from major bars to cool hotspots, like The Carrington in Surry Hills, Cafe Del Mar in Darling Harbour, Cuckoo Callay in Newtown, O Bar and Dining in the CBD, Fortune of War in The Rocks and Watsons Bay Hotel. Cocktails created especially for the month-long event can be enjoyed – and consumed responsibly! – with your friends.
Celebrity ambassadors like Dr Katrina Warren and Jamie Durie will be making appearances at the bars, accompanied by their four-legged friends.
This year’s event comes at an important time in Sydney’s bar culture history. Bars March founder Amy Cooper says, “Sydney bars are in focus right now as the lockouts debate intensifies, and we feel more than ever it’s important to showcase the creativity, talent and hard work that makes this city’s bar scene truly world class. Plus, we’re celebrating seven years of epic fun while helping animals.”
Celebrity gardener and animal lover Jamie Durie also says, “Bars March is a great initiative and still going strong because it’s about helping our four-legged friends through benefits to Animal Welfare League NSW while enjoying yourself, and having fun responsibly”.
