Gelato Messina are opening a Newtown store (Sydney)

Australia’s iconic gelato champions Gelato Messina are finally expanding to include a store in the inner-west, and it’s going to be located right smack bang in the middle of Newtown’s King Street. Taking over the former Gelatomassi store at 262 King Street, Messina will be setting up towards the end of August (exact date not yet confirmed) as one much-loved gelateria passes the baton to another after 14 successful years.

A statement posted on Messina’s official blog contains a quote from Gelatomassi’s Salvatore La Rose, indicating that the stalwart gelateria are moving out to focus on “other business interests” and have been been in conversation with Messina for about a year, selling the site on as they “can’t think of a better operator to take over from where Massi has left off”.

“I’ve known the boys from Massi since they opened their doors in 2003”, wrote Messina’s Nick Palumbo on the blog. “We’ve always liked Newtown as a potential destination but the truth is it felt a bit crowded with gelato operators so the time was never quite right.”
