Fishbone Local brings sustainable seafood barbecue to Canggu (Bali)

It should be well known by now that Canggu is one of the hottest neighbourhoods in Bali right now. The increasingly popular beachside destination has been attracting all kinds of new businesses, the latest of which is a seafood shack going by the name of Fish Bone Local. The first of several planned projects for Bali-based Brett Hospitality Group – a venture by founder Dominique Brett, hospitality veteran Isabella Rowell and venue developer Brant Bauer – Fishbone stands in the prime position where Batu Blong dips towards Old Man’s Beach, offering locals and visitors a contemporary eatery and bar with a sharp focus on simple, precise presentations of the finest market seafood available and a commitment to sustainability and social enterprise (an example being a strong partnership with Bali Sustainable Seafood).

With its close proximity to the beach and eccentric sea-inspired design (think fishing net menu baskets and repurposed crab trap light fixtures), Fishbone should fit in quite well with the vibrant Canggu scene. The market menu list will change daily, with heavy nods to Balinese beachside barbecue, and the drinks list will present guests with a compact selection of beer, wine, young coconuts, kombucha, and signature cocktails including no-fuss interpretations of classics using native ingredients like kaffir lime, pandan, and pomelo. Those keen for a true feast can expect dishes like pan-seared barramundi with sambal and Vietnamese-style slaw, beer-battered fish and chips, swordfish tikka skewers, and tuna poke.

“I’ve always loved beach barbecue and a I jumped at the chance to bring a fresh aesthetic and perspective to a style of eating that never gets old, especially in Bali”, said Rowell, who most recently opened Seminyak hotspot Da Mario with Maurice Terzini’s Icebergs Group.
