Diner en Blanc Celebrates 5th Anniversary on Cockatoo Island (Sydney)

On Saturday night, Le Dîner en Blanc returned for its annual white dinner to celebrate its 5th anniversary. This year the popular event saw 5,000 people donned in white from head to toe flocking to the World Heritage listed Cockatoo Island.

Previously held at Sydney Opera House, Centennial Park, Bondi Beach, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Diner en Blanc is an annual event held at a secret outdoor location.

Guests brought along their own white chairs, tables, decorations, and food to enjoy an alfresco dinner amongst friends. The waving of white napkins marked the beginning of dinner and after the meal, the lighting of sparklers began a night of dancing.

With tunes by DJ Dan Ronwtree, projections by VJ Morph, and the classic French film Contempt projected on the cliff face, guests were in for a musical and visual feast.

At Diner en Blanc, it’s encouraged to bring your own dinner spread, but gourmet hampers were available when booked in advance. This year it included the likes of duck mousse, bresaola, prosciutto, Comté, brie, cornichons and Kurrajong lavosh, as well as salads, sourdough rolls, and Pepe Saya butter. A rum baba and white meringue kisses finished off the night on a sugar high. Fine wines by Seppelt topped off the meal nicely.

Since 1988 in Paris, François Pasquier and a few of his friends started Le Dîner en Blanc, initially only a friends and word of mouth event. Over the years it has grown internationally with the event celebrated on five continents annually. It may be more extravagant now, but the purpose hasn’t changed – it’s still about sharing a great meal with good friends in a secret outdoor location.

The event will return in 2017 at another secret location.
