One of Sydney’s all-time favourite casual dining spots, Devon Café, will be expanding from the flagship in Surry Hills this October to open a new venue at Barangaroo. The very welcome news does come with a heartbreaking announcement though: the hugely popular Devon on Danks in Waterloo will be closing its doors in a couple of weeks.
After two years bringing an exciting, energetic, and inventive café to Waterloo locals and visitors, building a huge cult following to mirror their Surry Hills sister, Devon on Danks is set to close doors on September 12, a decision which comes as the Devon team prepares for the redevelopment of the number two Danks Street address.
“We knew in the beginning that the lease would be about two years”, said owner Derek Puah. “This meant we could test the market and try to do something different, like our pastries, which worked well for us”.
“We decided to go to Barangaroo to be a little different. It’s where the big players are going with some great restaurants, and we felt like we are ready to take that next step”.
The new Barangaroo venue will include Devon’s famed signature brunch dishes, all designed by Executive Chef and owner Zachary Tan and Head Chef Morris Baco. There should also be a new range of Japanese katsu-style sandwiches with flavours like Korean Fried Chicken, an Eggplant Parmigiana, and some Thick-Cut Bacon and Egg. Hours for the venue will extend to dinner, with an array of Asian-inspired tapas dishes and a menu of beer, wine, and cocktails.
We should be getting more information ahead of the big opening, but for now, head along to Waterloo and say your goodbyes to Devon on Danks.
