Devon Cafe open new bar Lazy Suzie in Darlinghurst (Sydney)

The team behind cult favourite Devon Café have just opened up their first bar-restaurant with Lazy Suzie, a playful fusion style venture that is located in Darlinghurst, serving up Malaysian hawker-style street food and Asian-inspired cocktails. Owners Derek Puah and Zacharay Tan (who also serves as Exec. Chef) have looked to Penang for inspiration to craft a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu that moves away from the signature brunches of Devon Café and Devon on Danks to focus on street food in a space just big enough for 50 people.

“There was a gap in Sydney food for Malaysian hawker food where people could go to eat and drink in a casual space”, says Tan. “Lazy Suzie includes many traditional dishes but using native Australian produce”.

After spending time in Penang for research, Tan has put together an impressive line up of street snacks, hawker food, and Malay charcoal grill dishes to complement the inventive cocktail list which, lead by Bar Manager Marco Oscar Oshiro Giron (ex-Cruise Bar) includes Malaysian flavours derived from Kopitiams (coffee shops) and mamak stalls, meaning one can expect ingredients like pandan, jasmine, and lemongrass. Signature drinks include the Rama-Rama Spritz (Gin, blue-pea flower, jasmine, citrus, dandelion, and Burdock bitters), Kopi Tiam (Cognac, cold drip coffee, liqueur, coconut, cardamom, and espresso), and Teh Tarik (Whiskey, rosemary, green tea, nashi pear, and teapot bitters).

Lazy Suzie’s signature dishes include the Lam Mee Birthday Noodles, some Penang Char Koay Teow, and the ABC Shaved Blue-Pea Flower Ice with bubur cha cha and taro ice cream. Weekend brunches will see pan-Asian inspired dishes like the Lazy Suzie Scotch Egg, the Roti B.E.L.T, and some Buttermilk Pancakes with banana and roasted coconut ice cream. Devon pastries will also be on hand.

The space has been designed to create a moody atmosphere, anchored by a neon-lit sculpture which is a loose and tongue-in-cheek reference to the lazy Susan of old, surrounded by natural, recycled, and locally sourced materials like fire-charred timber, oxidised copper, steel, and marble.
