Crafted Live: Wollongong’s first ever BBQ, craft beer and music festival announced for April

This Easter, Wollongong is grilling up to become a part of the growing barbecue scene as Crafted Live: Brewed & BBQ’d launches at MacCabe Park. The Australian Barbecue Alliance (ABA) has sanctioned this one of a kind event to showcase low n’ slow competition BBQ, along with a heady dose of a craft beer & cider, live music from Aussie rocker Tex Perkins and blues musician Ash Grunwald, masterclasses and more.

The inaugural Crafted LIVE launched in Orange, NSW in 2016. Wollongong’s Crafted Live: Brewed & BBQ’d will kick off Saturday 15th April 11am – 8pm & Sunday 16th April 10am – 5pm. Winners of channel Seven’s Aussie Barbecue Heroes, the Skank brothers will host the event with 30 barbecue teams competing for the Grand Champion Trophy and a share of over $9,000 in cash and prizes.

Some of the top BBQ food vendors will be on hand to keep the public well fed, including Black Iron BBQ Smokers, Smokin Hot & Saucy, Artisan Flame and Berlin Bangers. The competition element of the event will comprise of 30 BBQ teams competing across six meat categories; Beef, Pork, Pork Ribs, Lamb, Chicken & Chef’s Choice. Competitors will be travelling from most states & territories of Australia for the event, which will also feature local Wollongong teams the Sheen Shangri La, Dave’s Texas BBQ and The Beard and the BBQ. The Blue Mountain’s all-female BBQ team Pit’s Perfect is also tossing their hats in the ring.

The ‘Brewed’ component of the event features 20 of Australia’s best craft brewers & cider-makers showcasing their products, and includes local Wollongong favourites Southern Brewers, Illawarra Brewing Co, Shark Island Brewing and Five Barrel Brewing. Patrons will be able to sample a range of beers & ciders throughout the afternoon and evening.

Along with the craft beer & BBQ festival will be live music headlined on Saturday 15th April by Melbourne rock identities Tex Perkins & The Ape, and then on Sunday 16th April by Blues & Roots legend, Ash Grunwald. Local talent including Joe Mungovan, The Lonesome Train, Big Erle and Patrick Lyons and the American Creek Band are also locked in to perform.

There will also be a range of masterclasses available, where patrons can get to taste, smell & learn from some of the best BBQ’ers & brewers in the business including; Australia’s very own Beer Diva Kirrily Wadhorn who will be running a master class pairing beers with cheeses and quizzing craft brewers on a range of brewing techniques.
