Carriageworks announce winter-themed “Burning Love” night market (Sydney)

The next instalment in the ongoing seasonal night markets from Carriageworks will pay homage to smoked, spiced and slow-cooked food with “Burning Love”. Teaming up with the infallible Porteño duo of Ben Milgate and Elvis Abrahanowicz, the arts and entertainment hub will host 55 of Sydney’s leading restaurants, bars and producers with special menus worked up around the theme, highlighting sure-shot winter-warmers from everything from shellfish cooked over coals (Rising Sun Workshop) to smoked mushroom toasties (OzHarvest) and charcoal grilled octopus (Porteno).

With Milgate and Abrahanowicz curating, the lineup is everything Sydney’s comfort food fantasties are made of. In addition to the aforementioned, joining in on the fiery cookoff is Morgan McGlone of Belles Hot Chicken, Andy Evans of Spice Temple, Mamak, Gelato Messina, Bodega 1904, Buffalo Dining Club, Alpha Restaurant, Ormeggio at the Spit, and more. Well known chefs in attendance include Darren Robertson, Kylie Kwong, Mike McEnearney, Palisa Anderson, Monty Koludrovic, and more.

“Following the sold-out success of our summer Night Market, we’re thrilled to collaborate with Ben and Elvis and continue Carriageworks’ commitment to presenting great contemporary food events”, said Carriageworks Director Lisa Havilah. “Ben and Elvis’ Night Market will be a very special Sydney event that connects people to Australia’s best food and drink talent and winter produce”.

Those heading along can not only expect a massive set up of stalls but also some free demonstrations showcasing the use of fire, smoke and coal, from traditional Aboriginal fire making and cooking techniques from Dwayne Bannon-Harrison of Ngaran Ngaran Cultural Awareness, to a demonstration by seafood legends Stephen Hodges and John Susman. Ben and Elvis will be taking the stage themselves to cook an eight hour wood fired crucified lamb with braised peas and chimichurri.

Of course, those keen to really make a night of will no doubt enjoy hopping across drink stalls from big players like Young Henrys and The Grifter Brewing Co, as well as Demoiselle Distillery (make sure you check their primal smoked vodka and smoked absinthe), Archie Rose, Earl’s Juke Joint, Jacoby’s, P&V Wine & Liquor, Poor Toms Gin, and more. That should take care of the fuel for all the planned live music, which for this Night Market come from local garage four-piece The Van Demons, and JD and the Hunger Men, which is the new project from Jeremy Davidson of The Snowdroppers.

Tickets to the Night Market on Friday 27th July are on sale now at carriageworks.com.au (entry is $10 and children under 12 are free).
