Birds of the Inner West: Sydney’s fried chicken festival returns with huge line up

Sydney got its first ever food festival dedicated to some of the city’s best fried chicken and wine with Birds of Redfern back in July, a curated line up that brought in the likes of Hartsyard and Mitch Orr to deliver crispy greatness while Cake Wines took care of the locally made drops. It was a huge sell-out event, obviously springing enough demand to turn it into an ongoing series. Hence, organisers Andrew Levins and Cake Wines are bringing the whole thing back, and this time they’re taking it to the inner-west.

Public House Petersham will be the scene for “Birds of the Inner West”, once again bringing in the city’s best as they cook-off in the venue’s carpark on a Sunday afternoon. Cakes Wines will be presenting their Art Series wines and DJ’s will be taking the decks from sunset.

So who’s involved? The epic line-up includes street food champs Belly Bao who will not only be cooking up BBC fried chicken wings, sarsaparilla wings, and spicy wings, but also offering some chicken baogers, a version of their famous Thursday only special but using a fried chicken fillet instead. Surry Hills sneaker and chicken enthusiasts Butter Sydney will be heading down with a menu that includes sticky fingers (juicy chicken ribs with sweet sticky sauce), their excellent chicken sandwiches, laces (shoestring fries with a surprise), and hot donuts. The kitchen team from The Erskinville Hotel have come on board with smoked buffalo chicken wings, buttermilk fried chicken burgers, and an American style BBQ with even more burgers.

It won’t stop there though, Hashtag Burger’s are bringing their notorious Down N Out (the guys who broke the internet with Pokemon Burgers) pop-up to the event with their DNO zinga burgers (which are brined in hot sauce and seasoned with 11 secret herbs and spices) and super indulgent chocolate fried chicken with candied double smoked speck and maple. Inner west superstars Mary’s Newtown will have their fried chicken burgers and fried chicken, and of course Public House Petersham’s kitchen won’t be sitting this one out, offering their own fried chicken “with a twist”, fried chicken burgers, and slides.

That’s a lot of fucking fried chicken.
