Popular Asian dessert chain Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart, which originated in Malaysia earlier this year, are said to turn over around 20,000 baked cheese tarts pet day. It’s this kind of popularity that has allowed for an easy and rapid expansion into other markets, and the latest to benefit is Australia with four stores in Melbourne and one in Sydney to open before we even hit 2017.
Working along the idea of “cheese makes everything taste better” (which is 100% fact), Hokkaido has been pushing out their freshly baked three-cheese tarts to huge demand, reflecting the distinctly richtaste of Hokkaido dairy which is a traditional recipe from Japan’s northern-most island of the same name – an island that’s known for producing half of all Japan’s milk and 90% of its natural cheese.
Shanghai, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia have already seen successful outlets pop up, all falling under the umbrella of ST Group, which also owns and operates PappaRich, NeNe Chicken, Gong Cha (a New Zealand exclusive), and iDarts Australia.
Sold at $3.90 each, the 4-inch tarts are baked daily on-site, with a taste that’s being described as rich and creamy with a distinct sweet and savoury taste. In terms of texture, the shortcrust base is crunchy and fluffy while the cheesy middle is kept soft and pillowy. Local cheeses will be sourced, replicating the recipe that has seen the business grow rapidly.
Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart will first open at Sydney’s World Square on Friday 23rd December. Melbourne already has two just-opened outlets – one at Chadstone and one at Box Hill – with Melbourne Central and QV locations to open before the month’s end. More shops are being planned for Sydney but locations are yet to be confirmed.
