Elwood locals may be wondering what happened to their beloved Turtle Cafe. Well, the space has been transformed into what will now be known as A Girl Called Jayne, a simple and elegant cafe that has already built up a loyal following with its use of high quality produce to deliver fresh-focused breakfast and lunch dishes that feature French, Mediterranean, and Japanese flavours.
Sitting on the corner of Ormond and Glen Huntley Road, the cafe seeks to highlight seasonal Victorian produce as well as regular single origin guest roasters from across the country. Dynamism sits at the heart of what owner Anthony Cannan and venue manager Yannick Beaucaine are looking to achieve, bringing a slice of Melbourne CBD’s cafe culture to Elwood.
“My aim with A Girl Called Jayne is to consistent excel in the dining experience from arrival to departure, including delivering high quality product, service and overall ambiance”, said Beaucaine, a chef and – interestingly enough – a Grammy-nominated music producer who has worked with artists such as Drake and Gallant. Oh, he’s also got a wealth of experience in the culinary arts behind him, particularly from working in Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris. He’s put together a tempting menu that includes breakfast options like brulée French toast with seasonal fruits, and harissa scrambled eggs with merguez sausace, as well as lunch essentials like the chicken katsu burger with crispy fried chicken thighs, shredded cabbage, kewpie mayo, daikon pickles and tonkatsu sauce.
Making use of its expansive sun-soaked outdoor area, A Girl Called Jayne is also offering a bunch of summer-appropriate cocktails like the Not Just Aperol Spritz with strawberry infused aperol mixed into prosecco, soda, basil leaf and cracked pepper, and the An Apple A Day which features fresh pressed apple with a choice of rum, whisky, gin or vodka, topped with fig & cinnamon bitters, agave and lime.
