Where to take dad to eat in Sydney this Father’s Day

Father’s Day is this Sunday 4th September and a man’s got to eat, right? If nothing else, the day is a chance to celebrate all your main man does throughout the year, and there are few ways to do that then by treating him to a good old fashioned feast, whether it be a sunny (the weather is looking nice for Sunday!) weekend session by the bay, a bustling Chinese chow-down, or an underground lunch in the CBD. We’ve put together five of the better last-minute ideas around Sydney this year to help you treat the old man. See below.

Chef’s Gallery (CBD, Parramatta, Bankstown, Macquarie)

cheftwo

Walk past a Chef’s Gallery any given night and you’d be reminded just how popular the contemporary Chinese restaurant has become. With them extending to Parramatta this year – making four Sydney restaurants in total, along with Town Hall, Bankstown and Macquarie – the business has never been more alive – an energy reflected in their menu of hand-made noodles, substantial mains, and inventive desserts.

A focus on the art of Chinese cuisine is showcased with the likes of pan fried scallops served with three sauces, Macanese style mini burgers of pork fillet, pork floss, lettuce, and sweet chilli mayo, and the kitchen’s interpretation of a classic surf and turf – lightly fried and salted fish fillet served with a mixed Chinese salad and crispy pork belly. All these are found on their regular a la carte menu which will be offered on Father’s Day, along with a free Tsingtao for Dad whether it be lunch or dinner. It’d be hard to look past this one if reasonably priced, casual Chinese contemporary fare is your father’s favourite.

INDU (CBD)

indusemifreddo

When INDU first opened at Angel Place late last year the restaurant’s following grew almost immediately, no doubt thanks to the reputation owner Dr. Sam Prince built with his nearby Mejico, and of course the excellent food and drink (their Yellow Submarine – with Bourbon and house-made mango chutney is a must). INDU looks to the coastal villages of India for inspiration, something which helps set the menu apart from other Indian restaurants along with the moody, subterranean fit-out, so them announcing a big recent refresh to their food and drink options (it’s a whole new menu) is an exciting chance to further explore this often ignored part of Indian cuisine.

If you’re still looking for a place to take the old man this weekend, heading along to INDU for lunch will be a good choice, and a chance to try the completely new menu, which has been curated into several set menu options ($65pp or $80pp) for the day. They are usually closed on Sundays too, so from 12pm head along to try the likes of Hot Smoked Rainbow Trout with lime and cardamom infused coconut milk, tamarind, compressed roe, and crispy trout skin; Egg Hopper with eggplant pickle, pomegranate pearls, goat’s curd, and coconut sambal; and a dessert of Peanut Semi Freddo with jaggery popcorn, chocolate mousse, salted caramel, and cocoa crumbs (pictured above). All dad’s will receive a complimentary beer to get them started. Note that INDU will only be open for lunch sittings this Sunday.

Glass Brasserie (CBD)

glassbras

Take dad to the historic Hilton Sydney and head on up to Luke Mangan’s stylish glass brasserie. The charming restaurant will be welcoming in renowned butchers Anthony and Victor Puharich (of Victor Churchill and Vic’s Meat Market) for a special Sunday Father’s Day lunch with sittings available from 1pm.

BBQ will be the focus for the lunch, with a three-course set menu with matched wines and Young Henry brews, complemented by an interactive element of discussion and tutorials aimed at helping dad brush up those BBQ skills. Anthony and Victor will be parting with expert tips and tricks dealing with the perfect cut of meat, cooking methods, meat seasoning, and more while the menu brings in dishes like Confit Pork Belly and Moroccan Spiced Lamb before finished with Dark Chocolate Cream and Milo Mousse. Bistro Moncur (Woollahra)

bistromoncur

The Woollahra Hotel’s hatted restaurant Bistro Moncur is an Eastern Suburb’s dining staple, and being that Father’s Day is a good chance to take treat dad to some of the finest this one should be a no-brainer. While they aren’t offering any exclusive specials specifically for this Sunday, it’s hard to look past a menu that reads like a Francophile’s dream. There’s Potato and Ricotta Gnocchi with zucchini, oyster mushroom, and sage butter; Duck Confit Cassoulet; and Prime Fillet Steak with sauce bearnaise on the current menu, with prices for mains ranging $32 to $48. Not bad for one of the best French restaurant’s in Sydney.

Primus Hotel Sydney (CBD)

high

Sydney’s new, increasingly popular (have you seen their rooftop pool?!) Primus Hotel Sydney are putting a bit of a muscular twist on the classic High Tea experience, offering what they call “The G’N’Tea” in their art-deco lobby. It’s a dude food twist with dishes like oyster Kilpatrick, wagyu sliders, and beef and burgundy pies coupled with heady cocktails like The Godfather (amaretto and American whisky). If your dad doesn’t ‘get’ high tea this might be the opportunity to make a convert out of him.
