Fourth of July events across Sydney and Melbourne 2017

Break out the fireworks because Fourth of July is upon us, giving us Aussies a good excuse to celebrate everything we think we know about American culture. That is, fatty delicious food, of course. There’s a whole bunch of events around the major cultural hubs of Sydney and Melbourne today (some even lasting the rest of the week) so we’ve rounded up some of our favourites for you.

The Australian (The Rocks, Sydney)

Simple on here. The iconic Australian Heritage Hotel perched up above The Rocks’ historic laneways is switching on the all-American taps for today and the rest of the week. Head along for American beers poured straight from the tap, most sourced from Southern Californian Stone Brewery, alongside food specials like the $12 American cheeseburger and $10 bowl of wings.

Surly’s (Surry Hills, Sydney)

Of course one of Surry Hills’ most popular American BBQ joints will be doing the most for 4th July. As always, they’ll be pulling at all the stops by turning their venue into a Southern BBQ soiree with Kentucky highball cocktails on arrival, an American BBQ tasting plate, fried chicken wings, and a bunch of live music from human jukebox Glenn Esmond. Hell, even Beam Suntory Brand Ambassador Dan Woolley is being flown down especially for the event, so you can guarantee they’ll be a bunch of free bourbon tastings going ’round. The party lasts from 6pm-9pm and it’s ticketed at $30pp (includes cocktail on arrival, BBQ tasting plate, fried chicken wings), though if you’re heading along make sure you book tickets in advance (they’ll be none on the door) – do so HERE.

BL Burgers (Various, Sydney)

As if you didn’t expect BL Burgers to come up with a fan-fucking-tastic special for 4th of July! The dynamic burger slingers have gone all out for this one, and it’s being offered throughout the week. It’s called the “American, Fuck Yeah” and holds nothing back with a BL beef pattie, American cheese, McClure’s pickles, American mustard, a special sloppy joe mix, and beer battered onion rings sandwiched in a BL milk bun. It’s available from now at Bar Luca Sydney and BL Burgers in Darlinghurst and Parramatta; from Wednesday at BL Burgers Beach Road in Bondi; and whenever you god damn want via foodora and UberEATS – for $17.

Burger Head (Penrith, Sydney)

The stalwart team behind Penrith’s Burger Head is calling this one the best burger they’ve ever done – a massive call seeing as the place has quickly turned into an institution worth travelling for. They’re calling it “The Americana” and it’s a beautiful beast of a thing with a smashed angus beef patty, smokey pulled BBQ brisket, American hi-melt cheese, USA mustard sauce and grilled onions.

Hopscotch Urban Beer Bar (Southbank, Melbourne)

One of Melbourne’s most popular new beer bars is curating a big part for their 4th of July action, kicking off from 5:30pm with live acts banging out American tunes while guests take part in hot dog eating competitions and beer pong while chugging on $10 pints of Brooklyn Lager and digging into other assorted American eats, like hot wings and burgers.

Freddie Wimpoles (St Kilda, Melbourne)

St Kilda’s rambunctious craft beer bar will be diving head first into their chance to celebrate all-American craft beers, and they’ll be extending the party to last all week. Anyone heading along can expect a whole range of American beer from all across the country, providing some much-needed chasers to greasy goodness like fried chicken, wings, Philly cheesesteaks, and $8 hotdogs. A 4-piece horn band will be on deck on the Sunday to take care of the soundtrack.

The Merrywell (Southbank, Melbourne)

Head along to the very centrally located Merrywell today, especially if you’ve got an American ID on you. Why? Anyone who can prove their American heritage gets a free burger; more specifically, the exclusive “Liberty Burger” with double beef pattie, double cheese, smoked onion jam, pickles, lettuce, tomato and Merrywell’s signature sauce. For all non-Americans, the burger is going for $10 on the day – with a schooner of Carlton Draught and fries for $15. The giveaway will last from 12pm to 10pm and you better believe they’ll be a line of hungry burger fiends looking for a free feast, so be quick.
