Review: Zeus Street Greek justifies their recent growth with high quality casual eats

A few years ago Zeus Street Greek didn’t seem like it’d reach the level of growth it enjoys today. Their first store was out in Drummoyne, quietly building an empire as a fresh take on Greek street food, that offered more than just souvlakis and gyros, rightfully earned the business a loyal following. Fast forward to the present and there are multiple stores for this fast-casual gem, spanning Sydney, Brisbane, and more recently Perth. Zeus has surely joined the ranks of other fairly recent fast-casuals snatching dominance from established chains, adding to the great variety we have in Australia for those who need a quick bite that doesn’t involve mushy salads and sugary burger buns.

Their main offerings revolve around beautiful house-made pita breads, wrapped around succulent proteins that are cooked over a charcoal BBQ, traditional souvla style. Originally it was just chicken, pork and lamb, but now the menu features various takes on the style, one of the best of which is the Otto, which has chicken schnitzel tenderloins wrapped with Aegean slaw, preserved lemon mayo, caramelised onions, sweet chilli and coriander. Then you’ve got other additions like The Athenian, bringing in Wagyu beef kefta with tzatziki, piccalilli mustard, tomato, onion, chips and parsley; and Phyleto Fish with crispy fried flathead, fennel cucumber slaw, tzatziki and parsley.

Bigger groups can pile on the pita from the menu’s freshly made dips, the best choice being all three at once – beetroot hummus, eggplant, and tzatziki – with three pieces of pita. The option sits nicely with their seasonal salads and the essential Feta & Oregano Chips, which is their signature Yia Yia’s chips but seasoned with oregano and topped with creamy crumbled feta.

Their most intensely flavoured sides are where Zeus Street Greek really starts setting itself apart. Not counting big playing sit-down restaurants like Alpha and The Apollo, this is easily the best place to quickly tuck into some Haloumi, which they serve generously with lemon and oregano. Then you’ve got the Feta Filo Fingers, which is feta wrapped in filo pastry and then drizzled with honey and sesame, and for something with an entirely different texture, the Calamari, lightly fried with preserved lemon mayo.

Australia’s dining scene is all the more better now that we have quality fast-casuals like this growing and expanding at a rapid pace. Within the past few weeks alone, Zeus Street Greek has opened a new store in Sydney’s Australia Square, and Perth’s Mt Lawley. The next one will probably be the biggest opening to date for the business, bringing Zeus to Surry Hills (69-81 Foveaux Street) as of Thursday 18th May.
