North Bondi Fish – Bondi (Sydney)

North Bondi Fish is at the head of North Bondi beach just below the RSL, a casual eatery looking out over that iconic beach scene with a breezy, playful interior. There’s little surprise as to why this extended from a six month pop-up into a permanent venue back in 2013; there’s something about fresh, clean seafood and salad that not only pair up with the wine, but the atmosphere as a whole, blending North Bondi Fish with it’s surrounds to make for one of the most well-rounded businesses in the area.

As part of their commitment to seasonality, the restaurant has a new menu for the spring-summer period, bringing more of a focus on fresh, vibrant dishes alongside the standard favourites, including those stunning Yamba prawns.

You’d want to start with a range of smaller dishes, of which the Fried Arrow Squid and Mac & Cheese Arancini are some of the top picks. The good ol’ fashioned Garlic Bread can be a bit dry, but that’s more than made up for with those big, gooey arancini balls and that light, crunchy squid.

The Kingfish Sashimi is even better, benefiting from the restaurant’s commitment to high quality produce, and presented in a neat, simple style. Though no other starter can come close to the Yamba Prawns which are charcoal roasted and served with garlic, chilli, and herbs, incredibly juicy and giving you enough thick meat so that even if you’re sharing you’ll be satisfied with one or two.

Whole Baked Snapper with rainbow chard and gremolata is characteristic of a Matt Moran restaurant, large and designed for sharing with a dedication to provenance and natural flavour, dressing it up just enough to bring in some sharp twists that don’t overwhelm the fish. This is what North Bondi Fish is all about, and the reason this beach-house diner has remained as popular as it is. Pair this one up with a salad of lettuce, blood orange and shallots and grab a crispy white wine for a full meal.

Strawberry and Basil Jelly with lemon sorbet is as refreshing a dessert as any you’d find in the area, capturing spring with it’s simple focus on floral, fruity flavours. It’s a contrast to the indulgent Chocolate Delice with lime, delivering a texture quite similar to a very large kit-kat but smoother and much more balanced.
