First Impressions: Kansas City Shuffle’s ‘Happiness Hours’ Dumpling and Beer Pop-Up – The Rocks (Sydney)

“Simplicity is the key to brilliance” Bruce Lee once said and it seems Kansas City Shuffle in Sydney’s Rocks has taken this ethos to heart.

The city cafe crew has opened up a dumpling and beer pop-up bar inspired by the martial arts legend and good times with an idea so simple it seems incredible it’s not more common. Every Wednesday to Friday the bar has Happiness Hours from 5-6pm with $1 dumplings on offer. Yep, $1 dumplings!

Eager to take advantage of this stroke of genius we headed down to experience the happiness and happiness it is. The dumplings and dim sum (which come in baskets of 3-4) cover juicy prawns, classic, fluffy pork buns and delicious, chunky vegetarian spring rolls all freshly steamed and in need of urgent cooling.

Throw in Young Henry’s finest draughts on tap and some easily drinkable wines and you have the happy hour mix that should be a staple of after work drinks.

The kitshcy, no frills decorating and Bruce Lee quotes match the fun, back to basics menu and whether you nab one of the cute, little booths or grab a larger table for a group it feels like you’ll comfortably find what you need. The unpretentious, almost fly-by-night feel is endearing too making the enterprise actually feel like a genuine pop-up.

As Bruce Lee said “Real living is living for dumplings”… or something like that. Probably. Maybe.
