We at the AU are honoured to have Batch Brewing Co. on board as sponsors for our upcoming 9th Birthday Party in Sydney. Now a staple of the Marrickville scene, we caught up with Iain McKelvey to talk about the origins of the group, running a community minded brewery and producing damn good beer…... Much has been said about the character of QT Sydney, that charming, eccentric hotel sitting side-to-side with the historic State Theatre. Just one brief ride in the elevator should be enough to tell you that this is a playful time capsule that exists in a lane entirely of its own, step out into the lobby and that uniqueness is only reiterated. Fashion and design are kept consistently funky, and this desire to be different of course spills over to the hotel’s two bars. Head past the lobby, up the stairs, and you’ll eventually reach Gowings Bar & Grill, QT’s primary restaurant and bar, but it doesn’t stop there – climb up another set of stairs and you’ll get to the second bar, Gilt Lounge. ... It wasn’t hard to guess that the team behind Lobo Plantation would give Sydney one of it’s very best openings of 2016 – and that’s saying a lot, it’s been a huge year for food and drink around town – but what is surprising is the loose theme surrounding this new venture, Kittyhawk. The bar takes its name from a U.S P-40D fighter jet that dates all the way back to the French Liberation, so here one would find subtle nodes to Paris circa 1944, from WWII memorabilia and vintage maps to framed wartime posters and a large portrait of jets swooping over the countryside – all barely visible save for the flicker of candles and glow of hanging lights. ... Darlo Country Club has been alive with a spirited L.A Hamptons theme for a little over half a year now, fitting out the former Victoria Room space with a bright, energetic bar and restaurant full of playful cocktails (like the Eton Fizz and Gentlemen’s Agreement) and indulgent bar food. It didn’t take long for them to switch things up though, dimming the lights and tapping the team behind Barrio Cellar and Fei Jai to help flesh out the menu and move towards a more sophisticated restaurant aesthetic while maintaining that youthful bar atmosphere.... There have been some big changes over at Urban Purveyor Group as of late, particularly to their mega-venue The Argyle which has waved goodbye to acclaimed neighbour Ananas Bar & Brasserie while the French restaurant has made the leap over to a bigger space near Darling Harbour. To fill the void Ananas have left, Urban Purveyor Group have completely transformed the space for an elegant French restaurant into a neon-lit, slightly grungy Tex-Mex party bar and restaurant by the name of El Camino Cantina. It’s exciting, ostentatious, and flows seamlessly into the Argyle’s historic courtyard, bringing in a brand new perspective to the precinct.... Read More | Share it now!
Bar Chinois has brought an interesting fusion of Asian and French flavours as the very first small bar-cafe to hit the ever-evolving Kensington Street precinct in Chippendale. Shaped into a double terrace near the entrance of hawker-style food court Spice Alley, the new venue stands bathed in a sultry glow which reflects off the homely front in a spectacular fashion, making way for an impressive entry as the gorgeous fit-out is apparent the moment you step through that casual entrance. As far as looks go, Bar Chinois is a winner; the small space is utilised incredibly well with cosy booths and hidden private areas upstairs.... Read More | Share it now!
This week North Sydney spruced its nightlife with the launch of new bar and eatery, Hunter Gatherer, adding to the few options the area offers for the “make a night of it” crowd. It seems the ambient splendour and quality of canape and cocktail served up at Hunter Gatherer’s opening night, may hint at a new lease on life for the area.... Read More | Share it now!
To truly take in the many incredible perspectives available to us in Sydney it’s necessary to scout around The Rocks, Walsh Bay, and similar areas to find the various vantage points that are unique to this city. Blu Bar on 36 springs to mind when thinking about these vantage points, a long-standing bar 36 floors high up in the sky on top of the luxe Shangri-La Hotel. The premium cocktail bar has recently seen a few changes, driven by mixologist Art Palomata who has switched up the menu to put some new creations alongside the bar’s signatures, making full use of what he refers to as “liquid physics” to add a little bit of theatre to the already spectacular atmosphere that’s elevated by that priceless panoramic view. ... After firmly establishing themselves as the destination for craft beer lovers in Melbourne and Victoria, it’s with great excitement that the Beer DeLuxe brand was welcomed to Sydney last year, locating themselves right by the water at King Street Wharf (between Cargo Bar and Barangaroo) and setting up with their cosy, up-scale pub vibe complemented by bright astro-turf and a smart design that rolls on to the second floor with plush couches and a million dollar view. This is very much a big step for the Beer DeLuxe team and it’s obvious that they aren’t taking the opportunity lightly.... Read More | Share it now!
Four Seasons is one of the most recognised luxury accommodation properties in all of Sydney, and with them now housing Mark Best’s acclaimed Pei Modern, it makes sense for them to up their game when it comes to their Whisky-loving Grain. Situated off George Street and right near The Rocks, the warm, welcoming bar has become one of the city’s most well-stocked and well-known Whisky bars, with a strong focus on both single malts and blends from around the world and local, dedicated to growing their collection which is already 180 deep. ...
